The UAE has been ranked the fourth-best country in the world for expatriates in 2026, highlighting its continued appeal to international workers despite regional uncertainty.

The Emirates ranked behind Panama, Mexico and Thailand in the annual Expat Insider survey by InterNations. Brazil, Spain, Singapore, Portugal, Malaysia and Luxembourg completed the top 10.

The UAE also emerged as the highest-ranked country in the Middle East. It scored ahead of established expatriate destinations such as Spain, Singapore and Portugal.

UAE ranks first for expat essentials

The UAE secured the No. 1 position among 31 destinations in the Expat Essentials Index.

The index measures how easily expatriates can manage practical aspects of relocating and settling in another country.

The UAE ranked first for both visa processes and the ability to live without speaking the local language.

About 80% of respondents said the UAE’s visa process was easy to navigate. The global average stood at 55%.

The country also performed well in digital government services, cashless payments, internet connectivity and banking.

Housing was another strong area. Around 64% of respondents said it was easy to find accommodation in the UAE, compared with a global average of 44%.

However, housing costs remain a concern. Rents have continued to put pressure on residents in major centres such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

UAE scores strongly on quality of life

The UAE ranked third globally for quality of life in the survey.

Safety was a major strength. Around 94% of respondents expressed satisfaction with their personal safety in the country.

In addition, 89% said they were satisfied with political stability.

The UAE also scored well for healthcare access and quality. Restaurants, leisure facilities, road infrastructure and cultural attractions further supported its quality-of-life ranking.

These factors continue to make the country attractive to professionals relocating with families as well as younger international workers.

Career prospects strengthen UAE’s expat appeal

Career opportunities were another key factor behind the UAE’s strong overall ranking.

The country placed third in the Working Abroad Index and ranked first for career prospects.

More than half of respondents viewed the local job market positively. Meanwhile, 80% said moving to the UAE had improved their career opportunities.

Globally, only 55% of respondents reported a similar improvement.

Saudi Arabia also featured among the top destinations for working abroad. It ranked ninth in the Working Abroad Index, pointing to the growing appeal of Gulf economies among internationally mobile professionals.

Work-life balance remains a challenge

Despite strong career prospects, the UAE performed less strongly on work-life balance.

The country ranked 24th in the Work and Leisure subcategory. The result suggests that attractive career opportunities can come with longer working hours and higher workplace demands.

Personal finances were another area of concern.

The UAE ranked 18th for personal finance, as high living costs can reduce the impact of competitive salaries. Housing, schooling and healthcare costs remain important considerations for expatriates.

UAE retains strong expat satisfaction

Overall, 69% of expatriates surveyed said they were happy with life in the UAE. The figure was close to the global average of 70%.

Almost one-third of respondents described themselves as completely happy. That compared with 24% globally.

The survey was conducted between February 1 and March 31, 2026. This period covered developments before and after the outbreak of the US-Iran war.

InterNations noted that the results only partially reflect the conflict’s impact on expatriates in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Nevertheless, the UAE’s fourth-place ranking shows that the country continues to offer a strong combination of career opportunities, safety, infrastructure and ease of relocation.

While the cost of living remains a challenge, the latest ranking reinforces the UAE’s position as a major destination for international talent.
