The Gen Z workforce is transforming India’s job market at a pace that employers did not anticipate. A new report by Indeed shows that entry-level and junior employees are driving the biggest shifts in workplace behaviour. And these changes are pushing organisations to rethink engagement, loyalty, and performance expectations.
According to the Indeed Workplace Trends in India Report, 68 per cent of employers say new-age workplace trends are mostly adopted by junior staff. Moreover, the Gen Z workforce has become the core of this shift, as many young professionals openly embrace practices like quiet quitting, job hopping, and career cushioning. The study reveals that 58 per cent of Gen Z employees have used such behaviours at least once.
Resilience or revolt?
However, this shift has widened a perception gap. Employees view these actions as survival strategies. They use micro-retirements, flexible routines, and AI-driven methods to manage pressure and protect their careers. But employers often see these actions as lack of commitment. As the report notes, what employees call adaptation can look like erosion to managers.
The trend is especially visible in high-pressure sectors. The E-Commerce industry stands out, as 57 per cent of its workers admit to using exit-prep behaviours. This number is significantly higher than other sectors.
AI as the new workplace priority
Interestingly, AI has now become the top priority for Indian employees. It has even surpassed salary and burnout concerns. Workers use AI as a mentor to validate ideas, solve problems, and guide career growth. In fact, seven out of ten professionals rely on it for decision-making.
New work patterns emerging
The report also highlights new patterns shaped by the Gen Z workforce. Skill nomadism rapid role shifting and continuous upskilling is becoming common. Additionally, micro-retirements are gaining traction. These short breaks help employees recharge, reskill, and return to work with renewed clarity. Together, these behaviours reflect a strong desire for flexibility and healthier work-life balance.
