Infosys has revised its Infosys hybrid work framework, requiring employees to work from office for at least 10 days each month, limiting work-from-home exemptions, and collecting household electricity data from remote staff. The policy applies across India, was confirmed this week, and reflects shifting delivery and collaboration needs.

What changed in Infosys hybrid work

Under the updated Infosys hybrid work policy, employees can claim a maximum of five work-from-home exemption days per quarter. Any request beyond this limit requires prior approval and is restricted to documented medical conditions. Employees must still meet the minimum requirement of 10 office days each month.

The company clarified that exemptions outside the standard limit will not be granted routinely. Approval will depend on documentation and internal review. The changes apply to employees currently working remotely as well as those on hybrid schedules.

How the Infosys hybrid work system now operates

Alongside attendance rules, Infosys has asked remote employees to submit monthly data on household electricity consumption. The information includes power usage linked to air conditioners, lighting, fans, heaters, and solar installations.

The request surfaced through an internal communication from Chief Financial Officer Jayesh Sanghrajka, accessed by The Economic Times. He stated the exercise is part of an internal survey and not a cost-recovery effort.

Sanghrajka explained that electricity consumed during remote work contributes to Infosys’ greenhouse gas emissions footprint. The company is seeking more accurate data to improve sustainability disclosures and design cleaner energy initiatives.

Impact of Infosys hybrid work tightening

Infosys employs close to 300,000 people worldwide. The company reported a 55% reduction in per capita energy consumption since 2008 and said 77% of its electricity came from renewable sources in the last financial year. It had also disclosed work-from-home related emissions during 2020–21.

Reactions have varied. Some employees welcomed clearer reporting on environmental impact. Others questioned whether utility costs are shifting to staff as office infrastructure expenses fall.

The move aligns Infosys with peers such as Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro, which have also reinforced office attendance rules as client work becomes more coordination-driven.

The updated Infosys hybrid work framework reflects a broader recalibration across India’s IT services sector, where flexibility continues, but with tighter operational controls.
