Google AI adoption accelerated on February 27, 2026 as the company increased internal expectations around artificial intelligence use, extending requirements beyond engineers to sales, strategy and other teams. According to Business Insider, managers told staff that AI usage in workplace tasks may influence performance reviews later this year, reinforcing the broader Google AI adoption push.

The Google AI adoption shift broadens earlier policies that tied AI tools to software engineering roles. The Wall Street Journal had reported that some engineering jobs would include AI adoption metrics. Now, managers are incorporating similar expectations across non-technical functions.

Google AI adoption expands AI usage in workplace

Under the new approach, non-technical employees are expected to integrate AI into routine tasks. Staff in sales roles said they use internal systems that record calls, generate notes and analyse customer interactions. Some employees reported informal weekly AI usage targets.

In certain teams, managers have written AI expectations into formal role descriptions. Two employees told Business Insider that AI usage would factor into the company’s Googler Reviews and Development (GRAD) process. Senior employees face higher AI fluency expectations than junior staff.

Impact on employees and internal systems

Chief executive Sundar Pichai previously told employees that competitors were deploying AI internally and that Google must match that pace. On the fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call, chief financial officer Anat Ashkenazi said AI agents now generate about 50% of Google’s code before engineers review it. In April 2025, Pichai cited a figure above 30%.

Engineers rely on coding assistants, while other teams use tools such as a customised Gemini chatbot and an internal assistant called Goose. Google restricts access to approved internal AI systems to protect corporate data. Cloud sales teams use an AI avatar tool named Yoodli to rehearse pitches.

Meta and Microsoft have also linked AI usage in workplace settings to performance metrics, according to Business Insider. For Google, Google AI adoption now forms part of broader productivity standards across departments.
