According to Analytics India Magazine, Google announced new Gmail features under the Gmail Gemini AI initiative, aiming to help users manage emails faster using artificial intelligence, with the rollout beginning January 9 and expanding to more regions and languages later.
What changed with gmail Gemini AI
Gmail Gemini AI introduces AI-driven tools designed to reduce time spent searching and drafting emails. The update runs on Gemini 3. It first reaches users in the US in English.
One core change allows Gmail to analyse entire email threads. Users can now ask questions in natural language instead of searching keywords. The system pulls relevant details from past conversations.
AI Overviews in Gmail are available globally at no cost. However, direct inbox questioning remains limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
AI overviews in gmail improve information access
AI Overviews in Gmail generate short summaries of extended email threads. The tool combines information from multiple messages to answer user queries.
Google says this approach reduces the need to scroll through archived conversations. It also improves retrieval of deadlines, decisions, and shared files.
Blake Barnes, vice president of product for Gmail, said the system focuses on extracting exact details when users ask questions in plain language.
Writing tools and inbox prioritisation
Gmail Gemini AI expands access to AI writing features. Help Me Write and updated Suggested Replies now reach all users. These tools draft and refine emails using conversation context.
A new Proofread feature checks grammar, tone, and clarity. This option remains limited to paid AI subscribers. Google plans deeper personalisation next month using signals from other Google apps.
Another addition is AI Inbox. This view highlights priority emails, reminders, and deadlines. The system evaluates frequent contacts and inferred relationships from email content.
AI Inbox is under limited testing. Google expects broader availability in the coming months.
Next phase of rollout
Google plans to expand Gmail Gemini AI support to additional languages and regions beyond the initial US rollout. The company said the expansion will occur in phases as localisation and safety reviews are completed.
Testing of inbox prioritisation will continue with a limited group of users. Google is using feedback to refine how the system identifies priority messages, deadlines, and reminders. Broader access is expected after internal evaluation.
Future updates will focus on deeper personalisation. Gmail Gemini AI will use contextual signals from other Google services to improve writing suggestions and reply relevance. These signals will remain within existing privacy controls.
