Qatar is expanding artificial intelligence education across its school system as part of a new curriculum for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has introduced subjects and programmes covering artificial intelligence, data science, economics, commerce, entrepreneurship and practical vocational skills.

The changes will extend across primary, preparatory and secondary education. As a result, students will gain earlier exposure to emerging fields that could shape future university choices and career opportunities.

Qatar school curriculum expands focus on AI and future skills

The new curriculum moves beyond traditional academic subjects. It also places greater emphasis on skills that students may need in an increasingly digital and data-driven economy.

In addition to AI and data science, the ministry has introduced self-learning programmes covering money management, social responsibility, personal development, home economics and first aid.

Data science will help students develop analytical and critical-thinking skills. They will also learn to interpret information and make more evidence-based decisions.

Meanwhile, entrepreneurship and economics education could give students a stronger understanding of business and financial concepts from an earlier stage.

AI education will focus on responsible use

Qatar is not positioning artificial intelligence as a replacement for independent thinking.

Instead, the new approach stresses the importance of understanding AI’s risks and questioning and verifying AI-generated information.

This focus could become increasingly important as generative AI tools become more widely used by students.

The ministry’s approach also highlights the role of schools and families in guiding responsible technology use. Therefore, effective cooperation between teachers, parents and students will remain central to the curriculum’s implementation.

Self-learning programmes aim to give students more flexibility

The curriculum also introduces self-paced learning opportunities across a broad range of subjects.

Local media reports suggest that parents have welcomed the greater flexibility. They have also responded positively to programmes covering family culture and social responsibility.

However, parents have also pointed to the importance of strong implementation.

Qualified teachers, practical projects and effective school-family guidance will play a key role in determining how successfully students can apply the new knowledge.

Qatar joins Gulf push to build AI literacy

Qatar’s curriculum changes reflect a broader push across the Gulf to introduce AI education at an earlier age.

The UAE has also expanded AI teaching across its school system, while Saudi Arabia has introduced a national AI curriculum spanning multiple stages of education.

Qatar’s approach, however, places clear emphasis on responsible AI use alongside technical knowledge.

By combining AI education with data science, entrepreneurship and practical life skills, the country aims to better connect education with its digital transformation and evolving labour-market needs.

Ultimately, the success of the new curriculum will depend on how effectively schools translate these subjects from classroom concepts into practical skills.
