The Atlassian layoffs will cut about 1,600 jobs across global offices after CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes announced the decision on March 12, 2026. According to Business Today, “Atlassian lays off 1,600 employees as it ramps up AI investment” published on March 12, 2026, the move supports new artificial intelligence and enterprise sales spending.
Atlassian confirmed the Atlassian layoffs will reduce its workforce by roughly 10 percent. Employees across regions received emails informing them whether they were affected or whether consultations would begin locally. The company said North America accounts for about 40 percent of the layoffs. Australia follows with nearly 30 percent. Meanwhile, India represents around 16 percent of affected employees. The Atlassian layoffs therefore impact several global teams.
Tech layoffs 2026 reshape the software industry
The Atlassian layoffs arrive during wider tech layoffs 2026 across the technology sector. Several companies now redirect funding toward artificial intelligence development and enterprise platforms.
Atlassian said the restructuring allows the company to self-fund AI expansion while improving its financial position. CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes confirmed the decision in a message to employees.
“We are doing this to self-fund further investment in AI and enterprise sales, while strengthening our financial profile,” he said.
Structural changes follow Atlassian layoffs
The Atlassian layoffs also accompany organisational changes inside the company. Atlassian plans to restructure operations around its “System of Work” framework.
Company leadership said the framework helps teams move faster while adapting to industry changes. The software company develops collaboration tools widely used by engineering and business teams.
As part of the restructuring, Chief Technology Officer Rajeev Rajan will step down on March 31, 2026. He served in the role for nearly four years. Atlassian said affected workers will receive severance packages. The support includes at least 16 weeks of severance pay, additional compensation based on tenure and prorated bonuses for fiscal year 2026. Eligible employees will also receive healthcare coverage for up to six months.
The company will also offer career transition support and visa assistance where required. The Atlassian layoffs therefore represent both a workforce reduction and a strategic shift toward artificial intelligence.
