A Reddit post describing a workplace incident at a Delhi-based news organisation has sparked discussion around how Gen Z employees view loyalty, leverage, and work-life boundaries.
The post, shared under the tag Storytime, recounts events involving two fresh graduates who joined the organisation in May. According to the author, “for three months, everything went smoothly and both were trained in the work they were expected to do.”
The situation changed in August, when one of the freshers, referred to as Tanya, sought a 10-day leave to return to Kolkata during Durga Puja. The request was denied.
“She insisted that she would go home no matter what. When the leave was denied, she used her resignation as pressure,” the Reddit user wrote.
Resignation as a Negotiation Tool
The announcement reportedly came as a surprise to the team and management. “The announcement came as a shock to everyone, including our boss, who had not seen it coming.”
Although the manager attempted to dissuade her, Tanya remained firm and later formally submitted her resignation in September. “She appeared firm and even submitted her resignation few weeks later in September.”
Facing staff shortages and the potential loss of a trained employee, the management eventually reconsidered the leave request. “Eventually, the boss had to give in and approved her 10-day Durga Puja leave, with some of it unpaid since freshers do not have many leaves.”
Following the approval, Tanya withdrew her resignation and continued in her role. “Once the leave was approved, Tanya withdrew her resignation and continued working.”
Reflecting a Broader Gen Z Shift
Workplace analysts say such incidents reflect a broader shift in how Gen Z employees approach employment. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z workers tend to view loyalty as conditional and tied closely to personal priorities, cultural commitments, and work-life balance.
Durga Puja, a major cultural festival for Bengalis, often involves extended time with family. Increasingly, younger employees are less willing to forgo such commitments, even early in their careers.
At the same time, the incident highlights a changing perception of resignation. Rather than being treated solely as a final decision, resignation is increasingly used as leverage in negotiations over flexibility and working conditions.
The Reddit user noted that operational constraints played a key role in the outcome. “The decision was taken as our team was already short-staffed and could not afford to lose another member.”

While the post focuses on a single workplace, it reflects a growing challenge for employers across sectors: balancing organisational constraints with the expectations of a younger workforce that prioritises autonomy, cultural identity, and personal boundaries alongside professional growth.
