Punjab youth employment efforts received attention in the Punjab Assembly after finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the state government has provided 63,000 jobs to young people. According to The Times of India, “Govt provided 63,000 jobs to youths: Cheema,” published on March 10, 2026, the announcement came during the debate on the Governor’s address in Chandigarh.

Punjab youth employment gains through government recruitment

Finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the administration prioritised Punjab youth employment soon after assuming office. The government first issued recruitment advertisements for 30,000 government posts.

Later, the administration expanded hiring across departments. As a result, Cheema said the state has provided 63,000 government jobs to young people. He told the assembly that this recruitment push helped restore confidence among youth. At the same time, officials linked the programme to efforts aimed at slowing the trend of migration from Punjab.

Punjab employment policy focuses on skills and technical training

The state also expanded technical training capacity under its Punjab employment policy. Cheema said the government increased seats in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) by 20,000 positions.

Earlier administrations operated with around 35,000 ITI seats, many of which often remained vacant. Now the government aims to connect training programmes with labour demand.

Therefore, policymakers view skill development as a support system for Punjab youth employment growth. The policy links technical education with recruitment opportunities across industries.

Political debate continues over youth job promises

During the assembly session, cabinet minister Aman Arora also raised questions about past employment promises made by opposition parties.

He referred to the Congress party’s 2017 manifesto, which promised the ‘Ghar-Ghar Rozgar’ programme and unemployment assistance of ₹2,500 per month.Arora told legislators that the allowance could total ₹1.5 lakh over five years for each eligible youth. However, he asked opposition leaders to identify any beneficiary who received the promised support.

Social justice measures linked to punjab youth employment

Cheema also highlighted policy changes related to legal recruitment. Earlier governments rejected proposals for Scheduled Caste reservation in the recruitment of government lawyers, he said. Now the administration introduced that reservation framework. As a result, authorities recruited 58 lawyers from economically weaker sections.

The minister also criticised previous governments over drug-control efforts. He said the state launched the ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign as part of broader governance reforms.

In this context, officials link Punjab youth employment policies with skill development, recruitment and social inclusion initiatives across departments.
