ABU DHABI : The UAE aviation sector has become a core economic pillar, contributing about 18% to national GDP, according to sector officials. The expansion reflects infrastructure growth, rising connectivity, and workforce scaling across airports and airlines, as national authorities accelerate human capital development across the industry.
UAE aviation sector anchors economic activity
Across the country, aviation now supports nearly one million direct and indirect jobs. These roles span airlines, airports, air navigation services, and supporting industries. As passenger volumes and cargo traffic rise, aviation activity continues to feed broader trade and tourism flows.
The General Civil Aviation Authority oversees operations across five major airports. Together, they rely on a wide professional base to maintain daily flight operations and safety standards. Cabin crew alone account for about 38,000 roles, while pilots exceed 10,000 positions nationwide.
Workforce data highlights UAE aviation sector scale
Engineering and air traffic functions remain central to system reliability. The current workforce includes 4,651 licensed engineers and 464 air traffic controllers. Flight dispatchers number 427, supporting airline planning and regulatory compliance.
In parallel, talent demand surfaced clearly at the “Promising Future” Aviation Career Fair. The event drew more than 13,000 registrants. It also featured 27 participating organisations, including airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and certified training providers.
Emiratisation programs reshape UAE aviation sector hiring
National workforce integration now sits at the centre of aviation planning. Through Emiratisation initiatives, entities are aligning recruitment with technical training and long-term retention. As a result, aviation roles increasingly serve as career pathways for Emirati nationals.
Abu Dhabi Airports has introduced structured graduate recruitment, targeted technical tracks, and national succession planning. These measures focus on operational readiness and leadership continuity.
Meanwhile, Etihad Airways employs around 1,200 Emirati professionals. The airline has confirmed plans to recruit another 1,200 nationals over the next five years across operations, strategy, and support functions.
As airport capacity expands and digital systems scale, aviation authorities continue to invest in workforce readiness. The sector remains positioned as a stable contributor to GDP, employment, and national infrastructure development.
