Amazon is expected to cut 500 to 700 jobs in India as part of its latest global layoffs, according to sources cited by Business Standard. The reductions form part of a broader plan to eliminate around 16,000 roles worldwide.

The company announced the new round of layoffs after cutting 14,000 jobs globally in October last year. In India, the impact is expected across Amazon Web Services and retail business teams.

Where India teams face impact

India hosts large engineering, product, and operations teams supporting Amazon’s global business. Sources said the layoffs may affect multiple functions rather than a single department.

Some of the impact may relate to weaker performance during recent sales events. The company did not achieve targeted outcomes during two to three major campaigns, sources said.

What Amazon communicated internally

Amazon sent an internal email to its India workforce following the announcement. The message did not specify how many India-based roles may be affected.

Instead, the email shared a note from Beth Galetti, senior vice president for People Experience and Technology. She said the layoffs would impact about 16,000 roles across the company.

Galetti said Amazon is taking steps to support affected employees. She added that the company does not plan to conduct such reductions regularly.

India’s role in Amazon global workforce

India has become one of Amazon’s key global talent hubs over the past decade. Teams based in India support both domestic and international markets.

The country plays a central role in cloud services, e-commerce operations, and product development. Workforce changes in India often reflect broader global restructuring decisions.

Layoffs continue across the tech sector

Global job cuts have continued across the technology industry in 2025. According to Layoffs.fyi, 269 companies laid off 123,941 employees worldwide during the year.

Amazon’s latest reductions add to ongoing workforce adjustments across major technology firms.
