Amazon announced a $35 billion India program on Wednesday to create one million new jobs by 2030. The plan was revealed in India and expands the company’s long-term hiring, cloud infrastructure, and export goals. It matters now as India’s digital economy continues to scale.

What Amazon changed in its India roadmap

Amazon confirmed a revised investment target for 2030. The company will deploy $35 billion across e-commerce operations, logistics networks, and cloud capacity. This investment is in addition to nearly $40 billion already spent in India since 2010. The roadmap also includes expanded job creation across delivery, retail systems, and digital services.

Earlier, they had projected $15 billion in new investment by 2030. The estimate included $12.7 billion from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to meet rising business demand for cloud tools.

At its Smbhav Summit in New Delhi, Amazon said it plans to help create 1 million job opportunities and outlined deeper commitments to India’s digital and manufacturing ecosystem. The company also confirmed that more than $35 billion, or roughly Rs 3.14 trillion, will be invested in India by 2030.

Impact on India’s workforce and export sector

The job mandate sits at the core of the new plan. Amazon expects to add one million roles as it builds facilities, scales logistics, and expands AI-supported workflows. An economic impact report released at the summit said Amazon supported about 2.8 million direct, indirect, induced, and seasonal jobs in India in 2024.

E-commerce exports will also grow under the roadmap. Amazon plans to quadruple exports to $80 billion by 2030. Exports through Amazon Global Selling have already crossed $20 billion in enabled shipments from India.

Context from India’s technology investment environment

Amit Agarwal, head of emerging markets at Amazon, said the company will “democratise access to AI for millions of Indians.” His statement underscored the scale of new cloud and AI services planned for the country.

Amazon said its initiatives have digitised more than 12 million small businesses and will bring AI tools to 15 million more by 2030. The company also plans AI learning exposure for four million government school students.

The announcement followed Microsoft’s $17.5 billion commitment to India’s AI and cloud ecosystem. Large technology firms continue to view India as a high-growth market despite regulatory requirements and increased local competition.

How Amazon will execute the long-term plan

Amazon will phase investments through 2030 across infrastructure, workforce expansion, and AI systems. A new “Accelerate Exports” program will connect Indian sellers with manufacturing partners and conduct onboarding drives across hubs such as Tirupur, Kanpur, and Surat. This update comes even as Amazon reduces global corporate roles, including 14,000 layoffs announced during a broader restructuring.
