SBI inaugurated its Global Capability Centre in Bengaluru on Wednesday, marking the first such initiative by an Indian bank. The centre aims to support the expanding GCC ecosystem in India and strengthens SBI’s role in providing specialised banking services to global firms.
What changed in SBI’s GCC strategy
SBI opened the Global Capability Centre under the leadership of Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty. The launch took place in Bengaluru, a key hub for global technology and operations teams.
Alongside the GCC, SBI set up a dedicated relationship management unit. This team will focus only on banking and financial requirements of GCCs operating in India.
How the SBI GCC operates
The SBI GCC acts as a specialised interface for global companies. It supports transaction banking, financial services, and operational coordination tailored for GCC needs.
Until now, Indian banks lacked a dedicated GCC-focused platform. SBI’s move fills that gap. It aligns banking services with the operating models of multinational capability centres.
Impact on India’s GCC ecosystem
The new SBI GCC supports companies that run high-value operations in India. These include technology, analytics, finance, and product development teams.
By creating a single banking touchpoint, SBI aims to simplify financial operations for GCCs. This structure also strengthens Bengaluru’s position as a preferred location for global centres.
Supporting initiatives and branch expansion
During the event, the bank also inaugurated 11 new branches in Bengaluru. Senior officials, including Joohi Smita Sinha, Chief General Manager of the Bengaluru Circle, attended the ceremony.
SBI announced several CSR initiatives as well. These include upgrading 35 government primary schools across Karnataka, providing ENT medical equipment to IISc’s medical school hospital, planting 50,000 trees at Tumkur University, and donating an e-ambulance to the Madras Engineer Group in Bengaluru.
SBI stated that the GCC reflects its long-term focus on institutional banking. The bank will continue to expand services aligned with India’s growing global capability centre network.
