According to Times of Oman, “Oman’s first AI-powered asphalt self-paving technology launched in Dhofar,” published in May 2026, Oman introduced Oman smart road technology in Maqshan during Phase 4 of the Sultan Said bin Taimur Road Dualization Project to support faster and more accurate road construction.

Oman’s first AI-powered Asphalt self paving technology launched in Dhofar

The launch took place in the Wilayat of Maqshan in Dhofar Governorate during ongoing work on the Sultan Said bin Taimur Road Dualization Project. Officials introduced automated asphalt paving systems designed to improve road quality and increase construction efficiency.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said the Oman smart road technology project supports wider plans to adopt advanced construction systems across infrastructure projects. Authorities also aim to accelerate project completion while maintaining paving accuracy and sustainability standards.

A ceremony marking the launch was held under the patronage of Dr. Said bin Mohammed Al Saqri, Economic Adviser at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs.

Oman smart road technology supports construction automation

Officials stated that the paving system uses smart operational technologies to improve asphalt surface quality and increase precision during road construction activities. The system also helps automate construction processes linked to road development projects.

The Oman smart road technology initiative reflects ongoing efforts to modernise infrastructure development across the Sultanate. Government entities continue introducing advanced technologies in transport and construction sectors to support economic development objectives.

Dr. Said said the project represents progress in automating road sector operations and expanding the use of modern systems within construction activities across Oman.

Advanced paving systems improve highway quality and construction accuracy

The paving technology includes digital systems that support accurate asphalt distribution and surface sustainability during construction work. Officials said the systems contribute to higher consistency levels in road paving operations.

The Oman smart road technology deployment also supports safer and more organised project execution in large-scale highway developments. Construction teams can use automated paving systems to improve operational efficiency and reduce delays linked to manual processes.

Authorities continue reviewing new technologies that can support road construction standards and long-term transport development plans.

Oman smart road technology expands infrastructure development

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said the initiative aligns with national efforts to modernise infrastructure projects through advanced technologies. Officials continue exploring systems that support faster project delivery and sustainable construction practices.

The launch in Dhofar also highlights increasing investment in digital construction methods across the Sultanate’s transport sector. Authorities said smart paving systems can help improve operational efficiency, reduce construction time, and maintain higher standards in road surface quality.

The project also reflects Oman’s broader strategy to integrate advanced technologies into transport and infrastructure development initiatives across different governorates.
