Cloudflare layoffs will affect more than 1,100 employees globally after the cybersecurity and internet infrastructure company announced a 20% workforce reduction on May 8, 2026. According to Business Today, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said the company is restructuring operations as artificial intelligence changes how teams work and operate.

Cloudflare cuts over 1,100 jobs globally under AI first strategy

Cloudflare layoffs are linked to the company’s shift toward what chief executive Matthew Prince described as an “agentic AI-first operating model.” During the earnings call, Prince said AI usage inside the company increased by 600% over the last three months.

The company stated that smaller teams can now complete work that previously required much larger groups. Prince also said some existing roles no longer align with the type of work Cloudflare plans to prioritise going forward.

Cloudflare layoffs and AI restructuring change workforce operations

Cloudflare layoffs reflect wider restructuring trends across the technology industry as companies adopt AI-driven workflows and automation systems. The company clarified that the workforce reduction is tied to organisational restructuring and operational changes rather than employee performance or temporary budget issues.

At the end of 2025, Cloudflare employed 5,156 full-time workers globally. The announced cuts affect roughly one-fifth of the company’s workforce. Cloudflare also expects severance-related expenses between $140 million and $150 million during the second quarter.

Strong earnings continue despite workforce reductions

Cloudflare layoffs were announced even as the company exceeded Wall Street expectations during the first quarter. Revenue reached $639.8 million, above analyst forecasts of $621.9 million.

Adjusted profit also exceeded expectations at 25 cents per share. The company continues investing in AI systems while restructuring workforce operations to support its evolving business model.

Cloudflare layoffs add to tech job cuts across May 2026

Cloudflare layoffs add to broader workforce reductions across the technology industry in May 2026. Cognizant is reportedly planning workforce cuts that could exceed 15,000 jobs globally. Meta has also confirmed layoffs expected to affect nearly 8,000 employees in the United States.

Technology companies continue redesigning operations around automation, AI infrastructure, and leaner workforce structures as digital business models evolve.
