Qatar has introduced a new work permit that allows eligible foreign residents to work without paying an application fee. The move expands access to the country’s labour market while letting applicants keep their existing residence status.
The permit is available to residents under family sponsorship, permanent residents, investors and citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. As a result, more people already living in Qatar can take up formal employment without changing their immigration arrangements.
Eligible residents can retain their current visa status
Applicants do not need to convert or replace their existing residence visa to obtain the permit. Instead, they can continue under their current residency category while receiving authorisation to work for an approved employer.
However, the permit is employer-specific. Therefore, it only allows the holder to work for the company named in the permit. It does not permit employment across multiple organisations.
Work permit requirements
To qualify, applicants must meet two conditions:
- Hold a valid Qatar national identification card.
- Have a residence permit that remains valid for at least three months when the application is submitted.
These requirements ensure applicants have valid legal residency before joining the workforce.
Zero application fee lowers barriers to employment
The removal of the application fee reduces one of the financial barriers to entering Qatar’s formal labour market. Consequently, eligible residents who were previously unable or unwilling to seek employment may now find it easier to secure jobs.
The initiative is expected to benefit family-sponsored residents, investors and permanent residents who wish to work without changing their existing residency arrangements. Likewise, GCC citizens living in Qatar can use the new framework to formalise their employment.
Qatar continues to expand labour market access
The latest measure reflects Qatar’s ongoing efforts to make its labour market more accessible for eligible foreign residents. At the same time, it preserves the existing residency framework for applicants while providing employers with a clearer pathway to hire eligible talent.
