GEMS Education has appointed Nicola Huggett as Executive Principal of GEMS Wellington International School (WIS), effective April 2026. The move marks a strategic leadership transition at one of the group’s flagship institutions.
Importantly, current Principal and CEO Andrew Jenkins will continue in his role until January 2027. During this period, both leaders will work closely to ensure continuity and stability.
Three decades of global education leadership
Nicola Huggett brings over 30 years of leadership experience across leading UK and international schools. Most recently, she served as Head of Cheltenham College, where she led more than 1,100 students across junior and senior divisions.
Under her leadership, the school delivered strong academic outcomes. It also recorded its best A-Level results in a decade. In addition, she drove curriculum innovation and digital transformation. She strengthened staff engagement and supported international expansion, including collaboration with the college’s Oman campus.
Earlier in her career, Huggett held senior roles at Blundell’s School, Downe House School, and Haileybury. Her experience spans governance, safeguarding, financial sustainability, and student wellbeing.
Focus on academic excellence, innovation and student pathways
At WIS, Huggett will oversee strategic, academic, and operational functions. She will work closely with school leadership and the wider GEMS network.
The school has maintained an “Outstanding” rating from KHDA for 17 consecutive years. It is also recognised as a leading IB Diploma provider in the UAE, with multiple students achieving perfect scores of 45.
Going forward, Huggett will focus on maintaining high academic standards and parent satisfaction. She will also support the introduction of A Levels to expand student pathways. Moreover, she plans to strengthen Arabic and Islamic education while promoting innovation in learning environments.
GEMS leadership backs strategic appointment
Dino Varkey said Huggett’s appointment reflects the organisation’s focus on excellence and innovation. He highlighted her ability to lead complex school communities and build high-performing teams.
He also acknowledged Andrew Jenkins’ contributions since 2017. Under Jenkins, the school achieved strong academic results and consistent inspection outcomes. Varkey noted that the institution is well-positioned for its next phase of growth.
Vision: balancing innovation with character development
Commenting on her new role, Huggett said she was inspired by the UAE’s vision for education. She emphasised her commitment to combining technological innovation with character development.
She also highlighted the importance of student voice, inclusion, and cultural integration. According to her, these elements are critical in preparing students for a rapidly evolving global landscape.
Sector influence and professional contributions
Beyond school leadership, Huggett actively contributes to the education sector. She currently chairs the Professional Development Committee at the Heads’ Conference (HMC).
In addition, she has led national leadership programmes and spoken at global forums on school improvement and professional development.
