The Sharjah Department of Human Resources (SDHR) recently held a major discussion session in Khorfakkan to review the performance evaluation system used in government entities across the Eastern Region. The meeting took place at the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services Theater and included representatives from multiple government departments.

The primary goal of the session was to strengthen the evaluation process by identifying challenges and exploring ways to make assessments more accurate and fair. Through open dialogue, participants shared practical ideas to enhance the overall transparency of the appraisal system.

Focus on clear and measurable performance goals

During the session, SDHR experts discussed how to set SMART goals, objectives that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. They explained that clear targets help both employees and evaluators track progress more effectively.

Moreover, the team emphasized using evidence-based methods and direct observations when assessing performance. This approach ensures that appraisals remain objective and focused on results rather than personal opinions.

Addressing challenges and sharing best practices

The SDHR performance review also explored the behavioral aspects of employee evaluations. Officials discussed how to assess professional conduct and teamwork alongside technical performance. Real-life examples were shared to help illustrate how fair and constructive feedback can drive growth.

In addition, the session addressed common challenges faced by government entities during evaluations, such as unclear criteria or inconsistent feedback. To overcome these, the department presented tested strategies that have already improved the quality and impact of performance appraisals in several agencies.

Strengthening transparency across government

By the end of the session, participants agreed that open communication and structured evaluation tools are essential for success. The department reiterated that performance management should not only measure results but also motivate employees and enhance public service delivery.

Through this continuous review of the performance evaluation system, SDHR aims to build a culture of accountability, fairness, and shared progress across the Eastern Region’s government institutions.
