Microsoft Copilot Cowork is expanding automation capabilities inside Microsoft 365 after the company introduced a system that converts user requests into workflows across workplace apps. Microsoft announced the feature on March 9, 2026, and began early access through its Frontier programme.

Microsoft Copilot Cowork enables automated workflows across apps

Microsoft said Microsoft Copilot Cowork allows users to describe a goal rather than execute each step manually. The system then converts the request into a workflow that runs across Microsoft 365 tools.

For example, the assistant can coordinate actions across Outlook, Teams and Excel. Users can monitor each step, approve suggestions or pause tasks during execution.

As a result, Microsoft Copilot Cowork moves the assistant from simple responses to task completion. Microsoft said the goal is to help Copilot perform real work rather than only generate text.

Microsoft 365 Copilot features now use Claude capabilities

The new system integrates technology developed with Anthropic’s Claude models. Microsoft said the integration helps Copilot interpret user intent and organise complex workflows.

These Microsoft 365 Copilot features rely on signals collected from workplace applications. The company calls this context system Work IQ.

Work IQ gathers information from emails, meetings, messages and files. Then it helps Microsoft Copilot Cowork understand context before executing tasks.

AI tool handles meeting planning and research

Microsoft described several workplace scenarios where the system operates. For instance, Microsoft Copilot can review an Outlook calendar and detect scheduling conflicts.

Then the assistant suggests rescheduling meetings or creating focus blocks. In addition, it can gather company data from reports, filings and analyst commentary.

The system can also prepare briefing materials for client meetings. It collects content from emails and documents, generates analysis and builds presentation slides inside Microsoft 365.

Security Controls Built Into Microsoft 365 Copilot Features

They said Microsoft Copilot Cowork runs inside the company’s existing security and governance framework.

The system respects identity permissions, compliance policies and audit controls. At the same time, tasks run in a sandboxed cloud environment. This design allows workflows to continue even when users switch devices. Therefore, Microsoft 365 Copilot features aim to automate work while maintaining enterprise security standards.
